Ename

Somewhat downstream along the Schelde lies Ename, a part of Oudenaarde. In the early Middle Ages, the village was on the dividing line between the French and German empires. The German emperor built a defense post around 974. In the immediate vicinity, a trade settlement developed. This evolution broke down when the Count of Flanders, French Vazal, Ename conquered in 1050 and built a Benedictine abbey on the ruins. This held for 7 centuries.
