Ename

Somewhat downstream along the Schelde lies Ename, a part of Oudenaarde. In the early Middle Ages, the village was on the dividing line between the French and German empires. The German emperor built a defense post around 974. In the immediate vicinity, a trade settlement developed. This evolution broke down when the Count of Flanders, French Vazal, Ename conquered in 1050 and built a Benedictine abbey on the ruins. This held for 7 centuries.

The foundations of the abbey are today an archaeological park with a European appearance. Through the multimedia time window on the archaeological site, the visitor's eye abdij is brought to life again.

In the Provincial Archaeological Museum of Ename (Pam Ename) 1000 years of history are engulfed in an engaging way. The museum is in the shadow of the Ottoman St. Laurentius church, which commenced its secrets in the early 1990s. In 1992, there were discovered Byzantine murals. As a testimony of Ottoman civilization, she is unique in Flanders.

A visit to Ename can end with a walk through the Forest t'Ename, along the signposted Mariette Tielemanspad.
